(supplying our customers
with handmade custom strings since 1969)
We
offer two styles of custom strings
|
Endless loop bowstrings
These
strings are used in compound bow and traditional bow applications and feature
loops that are over-served with either No. 4 Nylon or BCY #3D (Spectra) servings. Loop
servings are required to secure the ends of the string bundles and to
strengthen the loops as a 16 strand string will have only 8 strands in the
loops. The strings are fabricated
using two colors and twisted to achieve a "candy-stripe” effect.
Flemish twist bowstrings
These strings are used primarily for recurves and longbows. These are offered in two colors with a two-ply twist. Loop servings are not required as the loops in a 16 strand string will have 16 strands in the loop. Flemish twist strings have stronger loops and are quieter shooting strings than those of endless loop construction. During the past year we have started using "tracer" colors in our flemish strings to improve their visual appearance. For example: Making a string with black and tan bundles we would insert a strand of red into the black bundle.
Center servings
All of our strings that are made from Dacron B50 material are center served with .018 Brownell Traditional braided polyester serving. On strings made from Fastflight or S4 we use BCY 62 .018" (black/white) braided Spectra. BCY 62 can be used on B50 strings for an additional charge of $1.00 per string.
Colors available
Dacron B-50 White, black, red, teal green, blue, yellow, brown, tan and pink. New colors: Cocobolo & Natural Cedar.
Fastflight Black, white, red,
teal green, blue, yellow,
purple, tan and pink.
S4 Black, white, red, teal green, blue, tan and purple.

A Few Thoughts On Strings And String Materials
Compound Bowstrings and Cables are finished to specified lengths under 100 pounds of tension and are made to either customer-supplied or manufacturer’s specifications.
Special Instructionsfor ordering Single Cam Bowstings
Because each manufacturer’s cams and pulleys are different diameters and configurations the length and locations of the servings will vary from bow model to bow model.
For right hand bows
Lay the bow on a flat surface with the lower cam to your right, start at the loop and measure the serving length. This is typically the long side of the string and will vary from 10” to 20” from start to finish. Some strings feature speed ball attachments (two crimp-on nock sets covered with shrink tubing) and the location of this is also required for proper placement.
The second measurement required is the start and finish of the center serving with all measurements starting at the original loop.
The third measurement is the start and finish of the pulley serving.
The final measurement is the length of the serving on the other end of the string. (Usually 6 to 10”)
Information expressed as following sample:
Note: The most accurate way to measure the string is to remove from the bow and pin the long loop end to a fixed position and measure with tension applied to the string.
Recurve Strings are made under tension and finished at a length four inches shorter than the specified AMO length of the bow. This is a “rule of the thumb” that seems to work most of the time. If you need a specific length to get the proper brace height please let us know.
Longbow Strings are finished at three inches less than the AMO length and have loops made much smaller to accommodate the narrower width of the bow limbs.
Brownell S4 String Material: We recently learned that S4 materials were being discontinued by the manufacturer because of the US Government diverting these materials to the Iraq war effort. Because of the quality and durability of the S4 compounds, we called Brownell and purchased their existing stocks of the S4 string material to assure that we would not run out in the near future.
Recurves/Longbows: Dacron B-50 strings—if your bow weight is under 40# use a 10-strand string. 40-45#: 12-strand string. 45-55#: 14-strands and 55# or more: 16-strands. Fastflight strings will use 18 strands for hunting weight bows. S4 strings will normally use 12 strands for hunting weight bows.
Fastflight and S4 bowstrings should not be used on older recurves and longbows. Only bows with limb tips suitably reinforced with Bo-tuff or similar materials should be outfitted with these strings. |
